Brazil Announces Equal Pay for Women, Men National Team Players

Brazil

The Brazilian Football Federation has announced on Wednesday that the women’s soccer team will receive the same pay as their male counterparts.

The federations’ president, Rogerio Caboclo said “Since March of this year, CBF has made an equal value in terms of prizes and daily rates between men’s and women’s football.”

“That is, the players earn the same thing as the players during the calls. What they receive by daily call, women also receive.

“There is no more gender difference, as the CBF is treating men and women equally,” he added.

Brazil now joins Australia, Norway and New Zealand among the nations who pay their men and women the same amount.

The new remuneration first communicated to the women’s team in March will allow the female players to receive the same compensation and prize money as international sporting stars Neymar Jr., Thiago Silva, Roberto Firmino and others.

The new pay will come into play at the 2021 Olympics, and then continue to apply for the proceeding men’s and women’s World Cups.

With this decision by the Brazil Football Federation, it will no doubt provide the United States women’s team with renewed vigour in its mission to achieve equality in their own national setup.

Last year, current women’s world champions the United States sued their federation, alleging discrimination over pay and conditions. The team appealed earlier this year after a judge dismissed their case.
