Baby Factory Raided In Enugu

Enugu State Police Command on Saturday discovered a baby factory at 9th Mile area of the state. They also rescued nine pregnant women at the place operated by one Ikechukwu Onoh, of Etiti, Amakwo-Ngwo village, in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Spokesman of the Police in the state, Ebere Amaraizu, told newsmen that policemen raided the baby factory, run in a residential apartment, after placing the place on a surveillance for months.

Amaraizu identified the nine pregnant women rescued as Eze Jennifer, 19, of Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State; Stella James, 19, from Ohaozara, Ebonyi State; Ovunna Ifeoma, 20, from Ezza, in Ebonyi State; Onyedika Agu, 23, of Isuawa, Awgu in Enugu State; Ugwu Christabel, 17, a native of Aku, in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State; Esther Nwankwo, 21, a native of Nkalagu, in Ebonyi State; and Happiness Mbaonu, 17, from Nnewi, Anambra State; Blessing James, 23, from Ohafia, Abia State, and Chibueze Ujunwa, 24, from Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State.

They are in various stages of pregnancy and also presently in custody of the police.

But Onoh, owner of the baby factory, told the police that he got a provisional approval in October 2007 from the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Enugu, to cater for pregnant women in his hospital, ‘Tex Hospital and Maternity Home’, located 9th Mile, but was later shut down.

He claimed that after the hospital was closed down, he accommodated the women in his private residence. Onoh said his error was not to formally notify the necessary authorities about the development.
