Explosion Hits Maiduguri Military Checkpoint

A suicide bomber detonated his Improvised Explosive Devices near a military check point at Shagari Low cost along Maiduguri-Monguno road, killing four people with several others injured.

Shagari low cost is an outskirt of Maiduguri metropolis and about 200 metres from the 7 Division, HQ, Nigerian Army.

This is coming barely 24 hours after a twin blasts, exploded at timber shed market along Baga road of the metropolis and Tungushe village, all near the 7 Division Headquarters living scores dead.

The fresh explosion on Thursday according to sources occurred at a military checkpoint around Shagari low cost estate when the suicide bomber who had planned to wreck havoc in the city of Maiduguri decided to detonate his explosives at the check point when he realized that it would be difficult for him to enter or beat up the security operatives.

Shagari low cost estate is north and about 5km away to the city of Maiduguri. It is also a stone throw to the Maiduguri Maximum Prison.

The source said, “Four people including the suicide bomber died at the check point, but I cannot tell you whether security operatives were part of the victims.

“It was at about 6pm when motorists and residents were rushing home to beat the 7pm curfew when a suicide bomber in one of the vehicles awaiting checking detonated his explosives killing four people with scores injured.

“Both dead ones and the injured were evacuated to an undisclosed hospital in Maiduguri while security operatives quickly cordoned off the area to prevent further attacks and killings,” the source stated.

Confirming the incident, the Police Commissioner, Aderemi Opadokun said “It is true as it happened near a military checkpoint.

“Two persons dead and three injured,” Opadokun stated.
