Senator-Ike-Ekweremadu

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has disclosed that the 2015 general elections in Nigeria is not a do-or-die affair, as some politicians in the country are presently making it to look like.

Ekweremadu made this declaration over the weekend at the Chinua Achebe Memorial Conference which took place at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.

The Senator warned politicians against over-heating the polity ahead of 2015.

Ekweremadu said at the occasion that, “let the kite perch and let the eagle perch too; if one says no to the other, let his wing break.”

He urged politicians in the country to strive to promote a socio-economic and political order where every Nigerian man or woman can actualise his or her potential without recourse to a godfather or godmother. He added that, “our children and our students should be taught that there is dignity in labour. The prevalent illusion that there is a shortcut must be discouraged.”

Speaking further, the lawmaker stated that late Achebe did his best to rally Nigerians back to their roots and indeed back to those sociocultural values for which their fathers lived. He also lamented that despite Achebe’s effort, the country is still lagging behind her contemporaries.
