Court Remands Woman in Kirikiri Prison for Assaulting Lawyer

A mother of five was on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 remanded in Kirikiri Prison by an Igbosere Magistrate Court over a case of assault and threat to life.

The accused, Mrs Uche Jerry Okoh, was alleged to have assaulted a legal practitioner, Mrs Blessing Ahmed, on April 19, 2017 in the Oko-Oba area of Lagos State in the course of carrying out her official duty as a legal consultant to the accused landlord.

But during the process, the accused allegedly pounced on the lawyer, tearing her dress, inflicting injuries on her and preventing her from completing her official duty.

The legal practitioner reported the case to the police, but there was an alleged attempt to put the matter under the carpet, which forced the lawyer to raise an alarm through a petition to the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Fatai Owoseni.

When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently committed to bail but failed to meet the condition.

On compassionate grounds, the trial judge, Mrs Botoku of Igbosere Magistrate Court 2, gave a bail conditions of N100,000, one surety in like sum, who must also have evidence of tax payment and verified address in a paid employment.

The lawyers to the complainant, Jude Ozemohya Esq, Armani John and Atunbi John did not object to the bail conditions.

The accused, who failed to meet her bail conditions, was subsequently remanded at the Kirikiri Maximum prison pending when she will be able to meet the conditions.

Meanwhile, the matter has been adjourned to June 15, 2017.
