Lagos Light Rail To Begin Operations Soon

If reports reaching our newsroom are anything to go by, then residents of Lagos State may soon heave a sigh of relief. This is because the daily traffic gridlocks commuters go through may soon become a thing of the past.

Aproko247 learnt that there are serious plans by the state government to ensure the rail project is completed before the end of 2015 and commercial operations commenced.

At the moment, trains to ply the rails have been ordered for importation and in few weeks’ time, the test run of the trains will take place.

Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, explains that work might begin in the next two months on the light train as the project is already 95 per cent completed.

“The stations and terminus at all our various train stations are already completed. Soon, we would start to test run the signaling, the rail tracks and the joints in preparation for the deployment of the rolling stocks for full commercial activities,” he said.

Mobereola disclosed that work on the first phase of the 27km Blue line from Okokomaiko to Marina is ongoing, while the Mile 2 to National Theatre, about seven kilometers, is 95 per cent completed. He added that the second phase of the project, from National Theatre to Marina, about five kilometers, work is in earnest.
