It has been revealed that more than 500,000 people are expected to grace the 2014 edition of the annual Port Harcourt Carnival in Rivers State.

This revelation was made by the Director General of the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency, Sam Dede, a veteran Nigerian actor.

Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Dede noted that this year’s event will go down as the biggest carnival brand in Africa. He said visitors are expected from Europe, America, Caribbean and some other African countries.

Dede said the event, also known as Carniriv, will take place from December 14 to 20.

On the security measures being put in place to have a hitch-free event, the DG stressed that the carnival will go down in history as one of the best organised with new innovations.

He explained that other attractions to expect at the occasion are Miss Carniriv Beauty Pageant, the launch and deployment of the biggest state-of-the-art performance stage; and increased exposure for local artists to perform on the same stage with international stars.

The DG also told journalists that, ‘We have opened up the carnival for commercial exploitation from interested corporate bodies by packaging at lease 12 signature carnival events into stand-alone brands for category sponsorships.

‘Each category sponsor is entitled to multiple levels of commercial and non-commercial exploitations such as publicity, speaking opportunities, branding, the distribution of company literatures/souvenirs and other levels of corporate canvassing.
