NASS Approves Local Governments Autonomy

Full autonomy has been granted to local government councils across Nigeria. This includes full financial and administrative controls of their territories. This was done by the National Assembly after amending Section 124 of the 1999 Constitution.

The amendment was one of the 22 other sections approved by the lower chamber of the National Assembly last week and ratified on Tuesday by the red chamber of NASS.

With this, all the 774 local government areas of the federation will no longer be under the control of the 36 states in Nigeria.

There had been several calls by some Nigerians for full local councils’ autonomy because some states were depriving them of their full rights. Also, the state governors were majorly the full determinant factor in picking who rules the local governments.

Going by the amended Constitution, consequential provision was provided for making the local governments a full third tier government in Nigeria without undue interference from the state governments.

The newly amended Constitution would be made available to all the States Houses of Assembly for approval.
