FG, Boko Haram Reach Truce

The Nigerian government has sealed a major deal with members of the terrorists group called Boko Haram. The two parties agreed a ceasefire after a meeting between representatives of both the Nigerian government and the Islamist sect.

Both parties met on Friday to discuss ways of putting an end to terror attacks in North East Nigeria, which have left thousands of people dead and several properties destroyed since the insurgents launched the attacks in the region some years ago.

In May 2013, President Goodluck Jonathan declared state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States in a bid to conquer the group.

But in recent times, Boko Haram has launched an offensive on some communities in the states, seizing communities and chasing the military from some of the towns.

In April 2014, the group attacked a secondary school in Chibok, Borno State and abducted more than 200 girls. A large number of the schoolgirls are still in their custody, despite wild global criticism of the action of the terror group.

Following the truce on Friday, 17 October 2014, the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, directed all Service Chiefs to adhere to the ceasefire deal between the group and Nigeria.

It is believed that the kidnapped girls would be released soon after the truce.
