Mayhem In Edo As Lawmakers Remove Speaker, 6 Others

Some members of the Edo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday morning, suspended the Speaker of the Assembly, Uyi Igbe, and six others.

The lawmakers, mostly members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, stormed the Assembly complex in a commando style and broke into the chamber, which was under lock and key. It was gathered that some police officers were with the Assembly men during the incident.

A source in Benin City informed Aproko247 that the legislators, numbering about nine, including the earlier suspended Deputy Speaker, Festus Ebea, sat for about seven minutes and moved a motion to suspend Hon Igbe.

“Igbe (Edo Speaker) has been suspended by some of his colleagues,” the source told our reporter over the phone on Tuesday afternoon. “Ebea presided over the sitting that lasted about seven minutes,” our informant added.

However, fight later reportedly broke out when the Speaker, who learnt about the development, stormed the Assembly to stop the action. Police officers have already been deployed to the Assembly to restore peace.
