'Drunk' Police Sgt Kills Engineer In Festac Over Bribe

A police sergeant attached to Festac Command, Lagos has reportedly shot dead a 33-year-old man. The victim, Oyoma Edewor, was killed on Saturday evening while towing his vehicle from Lekki to Festac.

According to an eyewitness account, the police officer, identified as Sgt Otene, allegedly wasted the life of the dude after he (victim) refused to ‘settle the boys for weekend’ (give bribe to the policemen).

The eyewitness told Aproko247 that Oyoma lived in Festac and was a promising Building Engineer, who was well known in the neighbourhood. It was further said that the cop was drunk as at the time of the incident as he was said to be staggering while trying to interrogate the deceased and his cousins, who were stopped by Sgt Otene and two other officers.

We were informed that late Oyoma’s vehicle had broken down in Lekki, which prompted him to get a towing van take his car to his Festac home. According to the eyewitness, while on their way, they were flagged down by the policemen but the driver of the towing van refused to stop for an unknown reason.

When he eventually stopped, the driver ran out, leaving Oyoma and his cousins to deal with the police. They were reportedly ordered to sit on the ground which they did, but while explaining to the officers what had happened, the allegedly drunk Sgt Otene opened fire on Oyoma and killed him on the spot.

The incident, according to what Aproko247 learnt, attracted crowd to the scene and the deceased was quickly identified by many in the crowd. The trigger happy cop reportedly told the mob that he suspected the deceased stole the vehicle, which was why he shot him dead.

The police officer’s explanation was said to have infuriated the swelling mob and on smelling trouble, the officers reportedly fled the scene.

Meanwhile, spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, as at press time, did not respond to enquiry made by Aproko247 on this matter. Our reporter sent a text message to her phone on Sunday but she is yet to respond.
