Some unknown gunmen, on Saturday night, shot dead a radical Islamic scholar in the ancient city of Zaria in Kaduna State.
Sheikh Muhamman Awwal ‘Albani Zaria’ was assassinated on his way home from an event he attended in Zaria. One of his wives, who was with him at the time of the incident, was also killed by the assassins.
We learnt that the woman died on the spot, while the late scholar gave up the ghost at St Luke Hospital in Wusasa area of Zaria, where he was rushed to after the shooting.
Until his death, the later cleric was the leader of an Islamic movement called Salafiyya. He was opposed to the teachings of Boko Haram group. In 2011, he was nabbed by the police for his radical preaching but a court judgement set him free at that time.
