In a sustained demonstration of its unwavering commitment to staff welfare, the Lagos State Government has disbursed a total sum of ₦701,054,344.57 to 232 beneficiaries, representing 146 deceased public servants who passed away while in active service between May 2025 and January 2026.
This gesture underscores the Government’s dedication to the welfare of its workforce and its continued support for the families of officers who served the State diligently until their passing.
Speaking during the official presentation of cheques held on Friday at the STO Resource Centre, Alausa, the Honourable Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Abayomi Oluyomi, stated that the payment of Insurance Death Benefits to the beneficiaries is a testament to the humane nature of amiable Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the Commissioner, the insurance death benefits scheme underscores the State Government’s dedication to ensuring that families of deceased staff are not left without support during difficult times. He noted that the initiative is a clear demonstration that Lagos State stands firmly with its workforce, even beyond active service.
In his words, “The cheques you will receive today are not just figures on paper; they represent recognition of the years of loyal service your loved ones gave to this State. They are a clear message that the Lagos State Government stands with you, even in this difficult season. “My hope is that these benefits will ease some immediate pressures, help you stabilise, and support the dreams your loved ones had for their families”
While emphasising that the Lagos State Government is more than a place of work but also a community that cares, Mr. Oluyomi further encouraged beneficiaries to make prudent use of the funds to support essential needs such as education, small business development, debt settlement, and overall family stability.
During his goodwill message, the Chairman House Committee on Finance, Hon Femi Saheed, urged the beneficiaries to take advantage of the insurance death benefits paid to them, emphasising the importance of securing a brighter future for the children of the deceased and empowering them to achieve greatness in life.
In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Finance, Mr. Mahmud Tajudeen Alao, emphasised that the cheque presentation underscores the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to the welfare of its workforce. He stated that the insurance scheme under which these benefits are being paid was established to ensure that even in death, our employees’ families are not left without support. It is a practical demonstration of the government’s responsibility and compassion.
Mahmud applauded the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his unwavering compassion and commitment to staff welfare. He said, “I wish to assure all public servants that the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains steadfast in strengthening staff welfare policies. The Ministry of Finance will continue to work diligently with relevant stakeholders to ensure prompt processing and transparency in the administration of all entitlements”.
Chairman Association of Senior Civil Servants, Comrade Segun Balogun emphasiised that the initiative as another proof of the administration’s people-oriented governance. He thanked the Lagos State Government while advising beneficiaries to plan wisely. “This support is a stepping stone towards rebuilding. I urge beneficiaries to apply this benefit strategically and to invest in sustainable ventures that will secure their family’s future”, he remarked.
On his part, the Managing Director of LASACO Assurance Plc, who was represented by the General Manager, Muyiwa Anwoju, commended the Lagos State Government for its exemplary leadership in the prompt payment to the beneficiaries of deceased staff. He noted that the State has distinguished itself as a pacesetter in the welfare of its workforce, particularly in ensuring that families of late employees receive their Insurance benefits.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Abisola Modupelola Adebayo expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the timely payment of the insurance benefits. She assured the government that the beneficiaries would take the Honourable Commissioner’s advice to heart, using the funds wisely to support the education, health, and overall well-being of their families.
