Buhari Blames Middlemen for Hike in Food Prices

The Federal Government has said it is very mindful of the challenges of high food prices faced by Nigerians. It has attributed this hike to the exploitative behaviour of middlemen who have prioritised profits over availability.

In a statement by the Presidency on Thursday, The President stated that the government is already engaging with food producers associations and groups to tackle the issues of exploitative behaviour by middlemen and other actors, which is one of the factors responsible for the high food prices being experienced.

He assured Nigerians that the situation of spiralling food prices will be a transient one.

“The government is it was very mindful of the challenge of high food price at the time when the economy is in a slow down due to the global pandemic and is doing everything in his power to bring down the prices of food items across the country,” he said.

It is to this effect that he has approved the release of 30,000 tons of maize from the national reserves, to animal feed producers in order to ease the current high cost of poultry production.
