COVID-19: Nigeria Death Toll Passes 1000

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Sunday, August 23, 2020, confirmed 322 new cases of coronavirus in Nigeria, with five new deaths.

The latest addition in the last 24 hours increased the total number of cases of the virus in Nigeria to over 52,000, while the number of deaths jumped to 1002, making it the country with the 4th highest death rate in Africa behind Algeria (1,435), Egypt (5,262), and South Africa (13,059).

The 322 new cases were reported in 18 states – Lagos (130), Bauchi (36), FCT (25), Edo (17), Bayelsa (14), Ogun (14), Oyo (14), Anambra (13), Kaduna (12), Ondo (11), Abia (10), Osun (6), Plateau (5), Kwara (5), Kano (4), Ebonyi (3), Sokoto (2) and Borno (1).

Since the index case was recorded in Nigeria in February 2020, a total of 378,023 samples have been tested in the country, with 52,227 returning positive.

However, a total of 38,945 cases of the COVID-19 have been treated by health officials and discharged after testing negative for the virus.

The NCDC said the 1,002 deaths recorded so far have been from 36 states of the federation as well as the Federal Capital Territory.

Lagos, with the highest number of cases and death in the country with 17,894 confirmed cases and 202 deaths, also has an impressive recovery of 15,209 cases.

Other confirmed cases are followed by Abuja (4,994), Oyo (3,050), Edo (2,537), Plateau (2,118), Rivers (2,048), Kaduna (2,011), Kano (1,708), Delta (1,701), Ogun (1,614), Ondo (1,512), Enugu (1.043), Ebonyi (960), Kwara (936), Kastina (771), Osun (768), Abia (749), Borno(740), Gombe (709) and Bauchi (643).

Imo state has recorded 521 cases, Benue (430), Nasarawa (396), Bayelsa (370), Jigawa (322), Akwa Ibom (271), Niger (237), Ekiti (218), Adamawa (206), Anambra (194), Sokoto (158), Kebbi (90), Cross River (80), Taraba (78), Zamfara (78), Yobe (67) and Kogi has recorded only 5 cases.

According to the NCDC, a multi-sectoral national Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), activated at Level 3 continues to coordinate the national response activities.
