Managing Director of Lekki Gardens, Richard Nyong, has been apprehended by the Lagos State Police Command.
Nyong was arrested on Thursday in connection with an uncompleted five-storey building owned by Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, and promoted by Lekki Gardens, that collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday in Lagos.
The unfortunate incident, which took place on Kushenla Road, Ikate Elegushi, Lagos State, left not less than 34 persons dead.
The state government, in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde said, “In a brazen act of defiance and impunity, the owners of the building, Messrs Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited, the promoters of Lekki Gardens, criminally unsealed the property and continued building beyond the approved floors until the unfortunate incident of Tuesday which has led to loss of lives.”
The state has already sealed the building, which was originally designed to be a three-storey structure.
Also, one of the contractors handling the project, Odofin Taiwo, has been arrested. He was reportedly nabbed on Wednesday by the police.
The suspects are expected to be charged to court soon by the state government.
