Senate Summons IG Over Ceaseless Kidnappings

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has been invited for questioning over the increase in crime rate in the country.

Arase was directed on Thursday to appear before the Senate to explain why cases of kidnapping and hostage taking has been on the increase lately in Nigeria.

The lawmakers want to hear from the country’s police chief how he plans to find a lasting solution to the problems.

This followed a motion moved by Senator Andy Uba on ‘The unfortunate recurrence of kidnapping and hostage taking in Nigeria- a national wake up call.’

He said something urgent must be done to nip the issued in the bud. His colleagues adopted the motion and condemned abduction in its entirety while commiserating with families of those who have lost their loved ones to kidnappers.

The Senators urged traditional institutions, religious authorities and all Nigerians to be more vigilant and to participate more actively in the security of the country.

The lawmakers suggested a stiffer punishment for those found guilty of kidnapping in Nigeria, noting that this would reduce the menace.
