Lagos State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has declared an indefinite industrial action against the management of Daily Independent Newspapers over the non-payment of 23 months salaries arrears and other emoluments to journalists working in the company.

Earlier this week, the management of the newspaper shut down the company after it failed to settle the workers.

In a statement jointly issued by the Chairman and Secretary of the union, Deji Elumoye and Bimbo Oyetunde respectively, the body condemned the “insensitivity of the Managing Director, Ted Iwere in offsetting the 23 months unpaid salaries of workers.”

Lagos NUJ therefore called for the sack of Iwere for “gross incompetence and unchallant attitude towards the plight of workers” and urged the company to appoint a “capable, dependable and reliable MD who the union can discuss and negotiate with.
