Don’t Pay For Transformers, Poles, Metres Again—Senate Tells Nigerians

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has been directed by the Senate to immediately enforce the abolishment of N702 fixed charges being collected from electricity consumers across the country.

According to the lawmakers, it was wrong for the Commission to continue charging consumers of electricity in Nigeria the said amount after it was ordered to stop it.

The Senate also asked the Discos to discontinue the practice of compulsory bulk metering of villages and communities in the rural areas. The red chamber of the National Assembly stressed that consumers should have the right to be part of bulk metering scheme or not.

The senators also unanimously ordered Discos to stop making consumers pay for meters, poles and transformers, which by law, were their properties.

They urged those who have proofs of purchasing such electricity items to notify the Discos for the recovery of their expenses from subsequent consumption of electricity.
