For Nigeria to achieve the desired economic growth and stability in the medium to long term, more efforts would have to be devoted to empowerment of women entrepreneurs.

This was the major view hammered on by Heritage Bank at the one-day workshop organised by Genevieve Gatherings, an offshoot of Genevieve Magazine, on Women Empowerment, which took place on Thursday at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.

The theme of the event was tagged ‘Becoming Financially Fearless’.

Speaking at the occasion on behalf of Heritage Bank, Olaide Okubanjo, who represented the Group Head, SME Banking, Bayo Ogunnusi, noted that the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, MSME, sector in the country is largely dominated by female entrepreneurs whose activities as pivot of national economic growth and stability deserve support.

He observed that the MSME sector needs to be encouraged through provision of massive financial and other logistic supports because it has huge potentials to stimulate overall national economic growth.

“Women entrepreneurs have proved to be very resourceful, pragmatic and focused as can be seen in the dynamics of the growth and evolution of the MSME culture in the country, especially in the past decade.

“This trend needs to be sustained for the nation to benefit greatly. In this regard, empowerment of women entrepreneurs needs to be given greater attention by financial services providers,” Ogunnusi said.

Another speaker at the event, Tonye Cole, co-founder and Group Executive Director of Sahara Group, revealed that most women naturally have the potentials to be successful but only need to carefully study their environment and strategically identify business opportunities that would eventually translate to wealth.

The workshop, which was an initiative of Genevieve Gatherings, owned by Betty Irabor, is an empowerment forum for aspiring entrepreneurs, especially women, to learn viable and successful business tips from industry experts and to also empower them on how to improve their businesses and financial future.
