Niger PDP To Punish Lawmaker Over Attack On Senate President

Niger State governor, Babaginda Aliyu, has noted that Abdullahi Degechi Usman Cheche, a members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, from the state in the House of Representatives will be disciplined for his alleged attack on Senate President, David Mark, on Thursday inside the green chamber.

Mark had gone to the lower chamber to have a meeting with the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, who was prevented from entering his office by security operatives.

However, the Senate President’s presence angered some members of the House of Representatives, including Cheche. He attempted to attack Mark and ran after him, but was stopped by his colleagues.

Reacting to the incident, Aliyu tendered an unreserved apology to the Senate President and disclosed that the lawmaker would be punished accordingly by the Niger State chapter of the PDP.

Aliyu said the embarrassing incident was a disrespect to the person of Mark, who once served as Niger State governor during the military era.

“I am indeed embarrassed when I watched on television and on social media the disgraceful conduct of Cheche against the senate president. While such conduct is not expected of a lawmaker, it is even shocking the member had the effrontery to attack the senate president who was one time the governor of Niger State,” the governor said in Minna on Thursday.

“We must understand that leadership comes with maturity and scrupulous disposition to persons or issues. We in Niger State are indeed shocked by his woeful conduct. Let me therefore apologise to the senate president for the embarrassing conduct of Chache.”
