Senate Receives Jonathan’s Request To Extend Emergency Rule In 3 States

The Senate has received a request sent by President Goodluck Jonathan to extend emergency rule in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States.

In May 2013, the President imposed emergency rule on the three northern states of Nigeria due to activities of Boko Haram sect in the area.

On Tuesday, the Nigeria Senate confirmed getting a letter from Jonathan seeking to extend the emergency rule for another six months for the fourth time.

On Monday, the National Defence Council approved the extension and advised the President to write the National Assembly for approval as stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.

The Council comprises the President, his Vice and security chiefs. The President heads the NDC.

Boko Haram has carried out deadly activities in north eastern part of Nigeria since 2009.
