Police To Check Activities Of Vigilante Groups

The Nigeria Police has said henceforth, vigilante groups in the country would be screened and their activities monitored.

This information was contained in a press statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by the Force spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu.

The police image-maker disclosed that the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, directed that an officer be appointed in all the police state commands in the country to monitor the various vigilante groups’ day-to-day activities.

Ojukwu said the IGP also instructed that regular reports about the groups be made available to him.

He said this move is to ensure the vigilante groups abide by regulations in carrying out their activities in order not to give room for abuse.

The instruction is coming hours after some vigilante groups and traditional hunters reportedly reclaimed Mubi town in Adamawa State from members of Boko Haram.

The locals killed several members of the terrorists’ group after they had earlier captured the town from the Nigerian troops and renamed it Madinatul Islam, meaning City of Islam.
