Police Denies Report Of 8 Escaped Chibok Girls

Borno State Police Commissioner, Tanko Lawan, has dissociated himself from a newspaper report that quoted him as confirming the escape of eight secondary school girls from Sambisa Forest, where they have been held captive by some terrorists after they were kidnapped over 70 days ago in Chibok, Borno State.

Lawan, while addressing journalists on the issue, frowned at the report and claimed that he never confirmed such to any journalist. He said the report has caused him some embarrassment, fuming that he could press charges against the newspaper that published the report.

In his words, Lawan said, “I want to state without fear of contradiction that I never confirmed the escape of eight of the abducted GGSS Chibok girls; I do not remember talking to the author of the story.

“The story has caused me some embarrassment, because I never spoke to anybody on the issue. If truly any of the girls had escaped, we will not hesitate in giving the media the information. It is sad that a journalist can just create a non-existing story and attribute same to me.”
