The police has explained its reason for putting a stop to the ‘BringBackOurGirls’ protests in Abuja. Commissioner of Police in Abuja, Joseph Mbu, speaking with newsmen on Monday, noted that the protests were becoming a nuisance to the government and the FCT, Abuja.

He also stated that the protests posed a serious security threat, pointing out that there was information getting to him that some thugs were planning to hijack the demonstrations to perpetrate an act of terrorism by detonating some bombs in the city.

The ‘BringBackOurGirls’ campaigners are demanding the rescue of over 250 girls kidnapped in a Chibok secondary school in Borno State on April 15, 2014. The schoolgirls were kidnapped by the terrorist group called Boko Haram, which literally means ‘Western education is prohibited.’

Mbu also cited the violent attack by a rival group, ‘Release Our Girls’, on the ‘BringBackOurGirls’ group last week to buttress his point.
