MEND Claims Responsibility For Rivers Refinery Explosion

Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, on Monday, said it was responsibility for the explosion at the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Jetty in Okrika, Rivers State, on Sunday.

Some people died in the blast while several others were injured.

In a statement posted online on Monday and signed by its spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, the group said it bombed the NNPC Jetty to tell the government that it is serious about its threat to sabotage oil installations in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

MEND further disclosed that the blast was part of its Operation Hurricane Exodus.

“The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) takes responsibility for the sabotage on Sunday, 18 May, 2014 , on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Refinery Jetty pipelines in Okrika, Rivers State of Nigeria,” the group announced on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, has called for an urgent probe of the unfortunate incident.
