Nigeria’s President, Goodluck Jonathan, has said that about 20,000 troops have been deployed to search and rescue the abducted students of the Government Girls Secondary School, GGSS, Chibok, Borno State. The schoolgirls were kidnapped in their school over a month ago by members of Boko Haram.
Jonathan, speaking in Paris, France, at a meeting hosted by the French President, Francois Hollande, on Saturday, said his government was doing everything possible to ensure the safe return of the girls to their families.
He added that about 20,000 troops have been deployed for the operation. The President did not, however, state whether the number includes foreign troops, but he confirmed that the military is carrying out surveillance on the region.
The abducted girls are believed to be kept in Sambisa Forest, Borno State by the terrorists.
The French leader noted that the Boko Haram issue has gone beyond Nigeria, and that it is now regional, which needs a coordinated approach to fighting it by governments of West Africa.
Hollande called the security summit to discuss ways of fighting terrorism in West Africa.
