Reps Order Probe Of Telecoms' 'Fake' Promos

The House of Representatives has ordered a probe into the alleged fraudulent and fake promotions currently being run by the four telecommunication networks in Nigeria; Airtel, Etisalat, Globacom and MTN.

In a motion jointly sponsored by two members of the House; Eddie Mbadiwe and Frank Enokorogha, they drew the attention of the House to allegations of some unethical practices carried out by these GSM network providers in which they send text messages to subscribers, asking them to partake in certain sales promotions for a fee.

The legislators argued that these companies rake millions of Naira from innocent Nigerians who easily fall for their tricks and that the telecoms providers, as a way of punishing the ‘hard nut to crack’ subscribers, who fail to fall for their (telecoms) ‘sales gimmicks’, the telecoms companies illegally and fraudulently charge them (subscribers) without authorisation and credit refunds not returned to them when demanded.

The lawmakers pointed out that if these telecoms outfits are not brought under control, Nigerians would continue to lose their hard-earned money without hope of any redress.

The House therefore ordered its Committee on Communications to investigate the allegations and report back its findings within four weeks.

One of such text messages sent by one of the service providers reads;
