The United Bank for Africa, UBA, has debunked reports that it was involved in the recent botched coup in Turkey.

Reacting to the reports on Tuesday in Lagos through a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Charles Aigbe, the Bank stressed that, “We remain focused and firmly committed to delivering on our strategy to build Africa’s premier banking institution.”

UBA made this known after a Turkey-based newspaper, Yenisafak, reported that some of those arrested in connection with the July 15, 2016 failed coup plot had told their interrogators that UBA Plc and a US Army General, John F. Campbell, were involved in the foiled attempt to take over power from the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The paper had claimed that funds in the region of $2 billion were moved from the US into UBA Plc from where it was disbursed to the coup plotters.

But UBA, through Aigbe said, “UBA is aware of the on-going and spurious media speculation linking our institution to recent events in Turkey. In light of this we believe it is necessary to categorically state that UBA has no involvement in or connection to these accusations, which are clearly false.”
