Fmr Akwa-Ibom Gov, Captain Adeusi Dies

A former Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Captain Joseph Adeduro Adeusi, has been reported dead at the age of 76.

This was disclosed last Saturday by the Special Assistant on Media to the state governor, Udom Emmanuel, Aniekeme Finbarr.

Finbarr revealed that the retired naval officer passed away in the morning of Saturday, April 16, 2016.

Adeusi was the Military Governor of Akwa Ibom State from August 1996 to August 1998 under the tenure of General Abdusalami Abubakar, which handed over power to duly elected civilian government of Olusegun Obasanjo.

Finbarr noted that last Saturday, a minute of silence was observed in his honour at the Government House Prayer Meeting.

The deceased, during his regime, founded the Akwa United Football Club, which played their inaugural match against the Rangers International F.C of Enugu in December 1996.

He initiated a probe into the government of Uyo Local Government Area, which was headed by John James Akpanudoedehe, who later became Senator.

In January 1998 he had to deal with protests over an oil spill from a Mobil pipeline. He spent over nine hours negotiating with several thousand demonstrators, eventually agreeing to establish a claims office in Eket. Over 300 of the demonstrators were later detained.
