Barcelona went two goals down in the first half, but Messi pulled one back for his team in the second stanza of the match.
The loss has thrown open the title challenge to Barca, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are on same points, 76, but the latter in first position on better goal difference, while Madrid stay closely in third with 75 points.
Sunday’s loss at Camp Nou is the fourth in April.
