Doctors Fire Back, Vow To Continue Strike

Medical doctors in Nigeria under the auspices of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, have reacted to the directive of the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Health, to suspend the residency programme of its members.

Addressing the media in Abuja on Friday, the association further said it will not end its industrial action, which caused the suspension of the programme by the government on Thursday.

According to the president of NMA, Kayode Obembe, the FG must show commitment to the doctors’ plights rather than aggravating it. He maintained that the government must meet its 24-point demand before the doctors will resume work.

He asked medical doctors across the country not to pick up locum appointment with government hospitals as directed by the government.

“Government should show commitment on her part in resolving the current impasse with the NMA rather than resorting to punitive measures that will only further aggravate the already deplorable situation,” Obembe said, while condemning “in totality the alleged presidential directive via the Federal Ministry of Health suspending Residency Training Programme in Nigeria.”
