A Vote For Fayose Is A Curse On Ekiti’s Future–Segun Oni

SEGUN+ONI+2

Ex-Governor of  Ekiti State, Olusegun Adebayo Oni, has opened up on his recent decision to leave his former party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to join forces with the ruling party in the state, the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Speaking exclusively to Folorunsho Hamzat on Friday evening, Oni said the decision to change his party remains his, saying it was about his conscience about his principle and, most importantly, about the future of Ekiti State.

In his words, “Whether I change my party or I retain my party, the bottom-line is, I retain my principle. I have decided to retain my principle. And this is simple. Anybody that I cannot point to as a role model for the average Ekiti child, I will not canvass for as governor of Ekiti State”.

“Anybody that I cannot pray to God in my heart for my child or relations to be like, I will not pray that he should be governor of Ekiti State. I have no regret taking the stand. And if I have to take this kind of decision twenty times over, I will not hesitate to take it. This is about my conscience, this is about my principle.

“This is about the future of Ekiti State, not really about anybody offending me. Of course, both Fayose’s and the Fayemi people offended me. But I have forgiven them all. So, the decision I have taken is because of the future of Ekiti State. If Fayose is made governor of Ekiti State now, we would have done more than installing many years of misrule that may destroy the incoming generation.

“Values and character would have been affected negatively. We would have helped to build a generation that would grow up to glorify dishonesty. I don’t want to see this happening, and if it should happen, God forbid, I don’t want to be a party to that. This is a moral stand I’m taking.

“And I believe that PDP made a mistake. Anybody that has moral questions hanging around him like Fayose; culture trial, murder trial, and what have you, such a character should not be made to be a candidate for governorship. Governorship position should be an exalted one, a position where we don’t bring people who will stain the rest. Once these kinds of characters come in, the impression the public will have is that we are all the same. We know how much we did cleansing the image of Ekiti State during the Fayose years.

“The state went down completely image-wise and we would try again to launder it because it is our heritage. My position remains that I’m not going to vote for crookedness. I’m not going to vote for lack of character. I’m going to oppose at any time anybody who is a negative role model for the Ekiti child.

“I want to implore all Ekiti people wherever they are to please get concerned. The June 21st governorship election in Ekiti State is more than an election. It is more than a four years issue. It is about salvaging a generation. It is about the future of the unborn Ekitis.”
