Jang Calls Plateau Attack Barbaric

The Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang, has condemned Monday’s attack in Shonong in Riyom local government area of the state by some gunmen. The incident left over 30 persons dead, mainly children, women and old men.

In a statement released on Tuesday by the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Yiljap Abraham, the governor described the act as barbaric, but assured residents of the state that government will continue to protect their lives and properties.
He frowned at the incessant attacks on villagers and the eventual seizure of their (villagers) homes by the invaders.

“It is becoming increasingly apparent that the attackers’ tactic is to displace communities and ultimately occupy their homes by striking them with terror and unwarranted fury. These will not succeed due to security measures being taken and increased community vigilance,” the statement said.

In addition, Abraham disclosed that, “the Plateau State Government, working with the various security structures on ground are adopting extra measures to defeat this emerging insurgency that aims at decimating and displacing communities, then occupy their land.”

Meanwhile, victims of the attack were given a mass burial on Tuesday evening amid crying and wailing. The villagers have since taken refuge in neighbouring villages for fear of the unknown. There have been conflicting human casualty figures. While the police said 16 people died in the attack, the villagers claimed over 30 persons lost their lives.
